5 ways to make an impression in a new job
64This hub was written from the point of view of your having just found your job. Even if you may not be quite there yet, this will come in useful when that time comes. And I am hoping that is rapidly approaching. The business world is fast paced and it’s competitive as hell. You have lots of people all looking for the same place at the front of the pack. So having a few quick-to-memorise ways to make an impression in a new firm is a definite way to build a successful career. Feel free to bookmark this hub here if you wish. Are you sitting comfortably? Let’s begin.
1. Know what is expected of you – in other words, don’t waste any time by doing something that is just not seen as important. Examine your conscience – look at your position – ask what are your goals? And ask yourself how your performance here will be measured by bosses and how will those reviews be handled. We all have reviews. No exceptions. Even the Number One in a business answers to others, like shareholders and investors!
2. Never miss a deadline - one of my favourite Golden Rules of Work. Some deadlines happen only once and should not be missed at any cost. But what if you know you will miss a deadline? Then inform your boss about it straight away without delay and say why the deadline will be missed. Bosses often need to get their bad news straight away. Don’t fall under the sheer mass of a workload, and be buried before you even clear that first obstacle that will test you. Things will always test you. If however you find that a deadline is unreasonable or unrealistically set – then you need to say it. Most jobs have different cultures and all job environments have their own “politics” attached but learn to respect the rules around deadlines.
3. Make a real effort to settle in and enjoy your job – give the new job a chance and a reasonable amount of time to get used to and adapt to it all. Build up a rapport with your workmates. It’s one of the most rewarding aspects of having a job and being part of the team. But also build up a reputation as a dependable person, and as someone who is always positive and good to be around. This is a huge factor in your work life, and will pay dividends. I believe in being positive. It’s one of the best qualities to have as a person and worker. That includes being the first to volunteer for any tasks going, whether it’s job-related or social.
4. Keep a record or account of what you do – in fact make sure you look at how your predecessors did things in similar positions and in similar circumstances. Those records come in so useful. And remember – if you are overachieving, tell others about it, including your boss.
5. Network with the right people – so even if it’s only a drink after work, a work environment is such that you should take every advantage you get. There’s little point in being good in your job if no one knows about it or knows who you are. Work is a competitive place so exploit and grow your network.
John Lennon had a famous song called “power to the people”. I think of this as I write this hub, and I know Lennon was right. Making our mark in a new job is satisfying and empowering for us. It helps to re-affirm who we are and keep us on the right path. By following a few simple steps, we stay on course, and we don’t fail. Make this your mantra. I wish you success in your new job. Do your best to enjoy it too.

Great hub Cheeky Girl, My favorite is "network with the right people". One lesson that I had to learn the hard way unfortunately. I'm usually kind and friendly to everyone, needless to say, in an office setting at times that can count against you when you least expect it. Thanks for sharing! :)
Very cool hub,I will defenitly take your advice in a job interview.
Things will always test you. - Great line! Personal growth always happens when you are pushed out of a comfort zone. I think you missed only one thing... that is summed up in a quote on an epitaph "here in lies a great company yes man." It is an epitaph you want to avoid. Yes do as you are expected but if what you are tasked to do is totally wrong stand up speak your mind. Be willing to do as expected but make your argument clear and understood. Many great mistakes are avoided because someone pointed out the folly of an action. If you turned out to be wrong, make a clear announcement that you learned a valuable lesson and thank them for the opportunity to grow. Cheeky girl - I like your hubs and style!
Love - Light - Laughter
