Sell goods on Facebook – how to sell goods on Social network

By

As an aspiring writer, and with a book almost written and ready for publication, I have done extensive research into selling my own book (and perhaps a few other items) to large groups of consumers, (about 500 million) and I discovered there are several ways of selling goods on Facebook, the world’s biggest Social Network. I am interested in how to make money on Facebook, and having a Facebook Business. Selling on a social network may sound a bit surprising, but there are several systems for selling on Facebook. If the names BeeShopy, Payvment, Shop Tab and Wildfire mean nothing to you, but you are interested in the concept of Facebook business, then sit back and relax. Cheeky Girl will explain.

The Facebook Marketplace

The Facebook Marketplace

Facebook is more now than a social network. For most of us, we do our Facebook login and check out what our friends and acquaintances are up to, and we may modify our accounts so as to gain backlinks for our other web business, be it hub pages, blog or whatever. But Facebook has for a few years now been seen as a collection of “Storefronts” (from an e-commerce point of view) but just no actual Stores on it. Facebook merely had pages with names and pictures of goods and then links or URLs to exterior websites outside Facebook. Storefronts are where Merchants can display and show or advertise their products, and when you click on them or their “Add to Carts”, you are taken away from Facebook to the Merchant website where the actual shopping cart business takes place. So in effect the e-commerce functionality was implied rather than 100% actual.

The reason for this pseudo-shopping system is because Facebook want to keep people and users of the network inside the Facebook Social Network. Imagine having to rush to a bank every time you saw something in the mall you wished to buy, just to make a transaction and you’ll see the point to avoiding tedium in e-commerce on a social network. Facebook wants to keep people in the Facebook environment and so forced business and retailers with finding ways of achieving this. And they succeeded.

Business on Facebook

Facebook has two good examples of storefront-only usability. One is Threadless, the other is Best Buy, and they both can integrate into Facebook social features such as sharing, commenting and Liking. (Not so far removed from what even Hub Pages offers on its pages!) except that these two systems don’t support e-commerce transactions inside Facebook. In 2009, a company called 1-800-Flowers became the first company (powered by Alvenda) on Facebook to allow full e-commerce to take place completely inside the Social Network. Alvenda uses Adobe Flash to enable its impressive store on Facebook, as it does on other stores like Brooks Brothers, Delta Airlines and others. (The actual Flash widget is located on a separate non-Facebook server.) The customer sees the widget in Facebook “Chrome” thanks to a custom iFrame application. (Do not confuse these applications with the usual Facebook applications, as many do not have a business slant to them.)

Brook Brothers retail store on Facebook, e-commerce built using Alvenda system.
Brook Brothers retail store on Facebook, e-commerce built using Alvenda system.

Since the Facebook is built to a certain size width of 520 pixels, shoppers get taken to the application canvas which sports a max width of 760 pixels. (The E-Commerce experience might see the Facebook of the future redesign its size to accommodate more shops like this.) Because Alvenda uses Flash technology to enable this miracle, it means that Apple iPhones, Ipods and iPads cannot use this technology thanks to Apple not supporting this technology, a MAJOR Apple drawback on those gadgets, which I have mentioned on a previous hub!

However I recommend Apple users experiment with Mini Opera Browser available on Apple iPads and iPhones which DOES support Flash. Flash does work on the Mac OS on Apple computers, Windows PCs and Linux PCs. 75% of the internet already uses Flash, and it will always be with us. Check out all the examples on this hub, as they are all working happily on Facebook, and the systems used to enable them have names like ShopTab, which powers Best Buys, and other firms. ShopTab allows the adding of products either one-by-one individually, or by means of a data feed import, and the editing of relative product information. Searching by keywords or price range is possible, as is the sharing of individual products you find in the store. Remember Facebook Search is a powerful tool that can aid in finding goods.

Booking Airlines tickets are now possible on Facebook and Delta Airlines can keep Facebook users on Facebook with the world’s first airline ticketing system, and it looks awesome! Other companies like Wildfire are offering similar services and platforms on Facebook. Besides the Smart Phone App market, the retail store and Business Application is another of the next big growth areas on the net. And Facebook looks like it is jumping into this area in a very big way. Soon businesses will focus on marketing on Facebook.

So what about the small sole trader or person who wants to sell on Facebook, and who may have a smaller scale offering of items? This is really where I wanted to concentrate for selling books on Facebook. The solution here is PAYVMENT. This service is Free, and fully integrates inside Facebook, and yes, it is not a Flash technology, so iPad and iPhone users can avail of it too. This is the leading shopping platform that anyone can use inside Facebook, for selling anything. PAYVMENT uses the Adaptive Payments API from PayPal. And so this really is state-of-the-art shopping technology thanks to the Open-Cart Network technology used, meaning that you can add other items from other businesses to your cart as you shop in Facebook (which uses the same system) and complete your purchase and payment from ANY storefront on Facebook, a totally awesome technology when you think about it.

The PAYVMENT system of e-commerce
The PAYVMENT system of e-commerce

PAYVMENT lets vendors fully customise goods and pages with HTML and uses TRUSTe privacy technology to protect Facebook users. I truly believe this system will become common standard for all people on Facebook, and might even some day allow people to do routine things some day like pay their Bills from within Facebook. For retailers and consumers, it supports FEDEX and UPS shipping (including fees) and the offering of discounts (if buying bulk) or thanks to you agreeing to “Like” their page, allowing you to receive coupons. Being able to manage products from within the Payment Application is another great reason to use PAYVMENT. Orglamix Cosmetics and Grayce by Molly Sims (Jewellery) also use PAYVMENT. If you have ever made or built an Amazon a-store and are familiar with the setting up involved, then setting up PAYVMENT will be a cinch as it is very similar in many ways.

BeeShopy, is another e-commerce application platform, and allows Shopify users / Vendors / merchants to automatically import product listings on an existing store, and show them in Facebook. Pretty neat! Sadly they only support Shopify and Magento but promise to add BigCommerce, OS Commerce and other e-commerce platforms soon. K2 is a clothing line that is sold on Facebook, and uses the BeeShopy e-commerce system.

Example of the Amazon e-commerce system using widgets or capsules (here on my own blog)
Example of the Amazon e-commerce system using widgets or capsules (here on my own blog)

Two names missing from the list are Google and Amazon. Given that they are two huge stores that have an online presence and account for a lot of commerce, you’d think they would be jumping on the Facebook bandwagon. What I find impressive about Facebook, is the very high amount of NON-GOOGLE advertising in Facebook, when compared to other advertisers. The shopping experience of Amazon makes it a competitor to Facebook.

But the whole e-commerce area for Facebook is due to expand as more and more people use and come to trust this growing and developing technology. Facebook marketing and Facebook business is a growing area and seen as a new chapter only now being written. As more and more vendors offer their wares, it is time for smaller vendors, and content creators with something to offer the world, to set up a stall in front of 500 million Facebook users and start touting for business. Like our towns and villages which succumbed to the big almighty malls and super markets, it was only a matter of time before the Facebook Social Network did the same and brought us stores to shop in.

For the purists, it may be against what they want from a social network, but for others, it may be a Gift. The idea of a Facebook Business account may not be as crazy as we thought. One thing is certain, the future of social networks like Facebook will continue to evolve and develop, and offer more functionality. But it is Facebook more than anyone who is leading the charge here, and e-commerce has never show so much promise as it does now.

What a brilliant informative hub on business on Facebook. I like the idea and would look into it. You have added a lot of info on it and that helps to understand. Good luck with your book! Don't be cheeky!

Cheeky Girl 17 months ago

Hello G Miah, cheers for the great comments. You should look into it, everyone on Hub Pages should be looking into it, from what I see. We are all promoting and marketing things of one kind or another, so that is why I wrote this. I'd love to see people selling and marketing from within Facebook. It's a whole new ballgame, and in one firms case it's free to set up! Merchandising and e-commerce is fantastic on Facebook, from what I can see. Thanks for the good luck for the book, sadly I am totally cheeky, and I am incurable! LOL! Have a great day!

Cheeky Girl I had no Idea that it was at all possible to sell something on facebook.I thought that BeeShoppy was just for products made from honey. I have some great old school punk rock CDS.So who knows ? I am twice your age and you probably know eight times as much about computers as me. So I have decided you will be my tutor.

And also I wanted to drop in and say Hi, and wish you a great Holiday season as well. Rock on my friend.

Cheeky, Cheeky, Cheeky you just get better and better, I copied that reply from Louis on the X Factor but I means it ya know.

Loves the layout and the Amazon Placements, rated awesome by this bad boy ; ) xoxo

Hello Tina, Thanks for the comments about Facebook and earning money on it. Yes, there is a wee bit of negative spin on the social network Facebook, but there is also major potential, and even we Hubbers can make something out of Facebook, as we are all writers and probably earning adsense and other affiliate income, so I figured why not share what I am learning here. Cheers! Thanks fort the input!

Hello acaetnna, glad you are finding Facebook an absorbing subject, I know I do.Once upon a time I was being hacked and couldn't get into my Facebook, but they have done a lot with it since then. It is a great network and I trust it more. (Some privacy issues to be ironed out maybe, but it's overall good.) Oh to bookmark anything with a browser, just hit CTRL + D on your keyboard and it is bookmarked. Just Ok your selection, and you can revisit your bookmarked page any time. I can browse people's hubs offline that way, it's cool, just make sure your browser supports that. Cheers!

Hello Fehl!! How moi fave Filipina poet doing today? Hope you are well! I love you calling me "Curly Hair". LOL! You are so funny! LMAO! Oh, how I am going to do it is by joining Payvment, as it is free all the way! Heh! I want to sell my book in as many ways as possible, and cut out as many middle men as possible. Cash in PayPal account, that will do moi! Hehehehe! Oh crap, did I add you in my Facebook? I will check! I will add you! Some people I need to add but they have different names in Facebook, and it is damn confusing! Thanks for the comment, Fehl! You are Blazing a Trail! LOL! XO

Hy Cheri! Yes, I was checking your hubs, and I am looking forward to knowing when the book is arriving, ads I'd love to buy a copy! I totally recommend trying out the Facebook Payvment platform, as it's free, and whaddya got to lose? We should be all using this Facebook! Cheers! Thanks for loving moi new pic too! Heh! :D

Hey Darski, great to get the comment - you are a published author here so this will be right up your street. Aw, should I have made it more simpler to read, sorry if I got kind of ahead of myself. I kinda do that some times! LOL! Well, if anyone here can set up a bunch of hubs and a blog and already has a Facebook account, then they are well on the way. It is easy, and when people click your Facebook "Like" button, it is even better. It can boost your rating there, and that in turn boosts your rating here cos of your backlinks to your hubs. That is what I do.

Wow, put the book excerpts on your website? Really? OMG I have to email you tonight! Heh! I can reciprocate. I am already letting artists show their art on my site art page. Darlene you are always welcome to publish anything on my site. I wish more people would. It's free and they get a link to their website or hub too! I think helping each other is the absolute right attitude, I have had many people help me in the past. Art (BadCo / TattoGuy) and Fehl and Allie8020 are especially included there. (There are s few others too!) Thanks for the rate up, Darski! Love and Peace always! X

Hy Tony! Oh yes, selling things on Facebook is a reality now. Beeshopy for honey. Um...that's the other bees, Tony. LOL! Hey I never let the age thing get in the way here! :) Oh oh, me a tutor. Feeling the pressure now. Heh! It is always a pleasure to see your comments and please pop by more often, I miss your comments, my friend! Hope you are looking forward to Christmas too. Happy Holiday Season Wishes from Me and Cathy too! Yes, we be rocking here! :D

Cheeky Girl 17 months ago

Hello Art / BadCo! Love your comments on moi new Facebook Hub! Glad ya like it. I am on a mission to get this book published and sold widely, Art. Thanks for the support and the good wishes as always! You're a star! *Hugs ya* Yes, I am becoming quite the advertiser - especially on my website. The Amazon ads are a drug! I can't help it! LOL!

Thank you everyone for the warm comments and vibes here. Obviously there is much to talk about when it comes to Facebook! Cheers all! :)

Wow this is a complete unknown to me.I thought Facebook was just a social network.Thank you for the new info,i'm sure my friends would like this too.

Cheers

Kaie Arwen 17 months ago

This was great........... I don't social network (I think I've told you that before), but this would be the best reason to actually do it (don't tell my son!) Thank you, and have a great Christmas! Kaie

anna20 17 months ago

It is quite difficult to sell product on facebook if you do not have good network.

Cheeky Girl 17 months ago

Hello always exploring: I am glad you read the hub on selling on Facebook. Yes it is still a social network, but it can do more than that now. Selling things on Facebook is now a reality. I included links to all the respective companies that offer the service now. Glad you read this. More people should be reading this, as it means a lot of good things ahead for those who choose to sell on Facebook. Cheers!

Hello Kaie, I understand you not wanting to use social network, I know lots of people who don't. But Hubbers who are putting hub pages out there for the world to see - might want some extra options available to them to put their offerings in front of large audiences. And over 500 million people are there in Facebook all social networking to each other. I am looking into this myself, as I think selling a book via Facebook is very possible now. Than ks for the comments and wishes, Kaie - you have a great Christmas too! :)

Anna, yes it is difficult to sell on Facebook if someone does not have an account, but it is not difficult to join up. It is as easy as joining Hub pages. To sell goods on Facebook is not that hard. The "Payvment" system mentioned above, is a free system and I think it is very easy to do, according to their website. Facebook is already free. If these systems turn out to be a success, will they be made available on other communities? Could Hub Pages some day have this feature, I wonder? Heh! I am putting the cat among the pigeons here now, but it needs to be talked about. This is real stuff happening here. Cheers Anna!

katrinasui 17 months ago

A very well researched and informative hub. I like the idea of selling goods on Facebook. Thanks for the nice suggestions i will try to follow these.

Cheeky Girl 17 months ago

Hello katrina, the idea of selling goods on Facebook is one I want to explore. I feel it has real potential. You never know, you might be able to offer something on Facebook n sale some day and earn money from it. Thanks for the comments. Cheers!

BONJOUR CHEEKY!! YES I AM ALWAYS ADDING AND TAKING AWAY FROM THE BOOK LOL..I GET NERVOUS LOL..HOWEVER IT IS BEING EDITED NOW. WORKING ON THE COVER. I AM SELF PUBLISHING WITH CREATE SPACE. YOUR BOOK IS COMING OUT!!!! I REALLY CAN'T WAIT WHO IS YOUR PUBLISHER? GREAT AMOUNT OF LUCK,LOVE AND BLESSINGS. CHEERS!!

Cheeky Girl 17 months ago

Hello Cheri! Thanks for the follow on twitter and MySpace! I appreciate it! Wow, it seems we are both working on finishing books each! LOL! That is so cool! I have looked into Create Space. That is very interesting. My publisher will be Lulu.com, (was impressed with Blaise25's experiences there and her book looks amazing!). I am also choosing a second publisher, most likely Xlibris.com. I have heard good things about them, and I know a lady who has published there too, she is a poet. I also intend to sell the book on my website, my blogs, and on Facebook. Hence this Hub Page on how to sell goods on the social network Facebook. I wish you luck in your book publishing too, Cheri. I wrote so much, now I am having to edit and finish it soon. Cheers, Cheri!

Springboard 17 months ago

Love this. If I could find a way to monetize Facebook in ANY way, when you consider the amount of time spent there, and the amount of money that Facebook technically generates for itself via my personal participation, I'm there. On your book, I wish you the highest level of success.

Cheeky Girl 17 months ago

Hy Springboard, yes there are ways to monetize Facebook. I am happy to say that by merely just having a Facebook account, and linking back to my hub pages, or referencing links to where I decide - Facebook can enable me to increase my income. Facebook is something I am doing a lot of research on at the moment, and will be publishing a hub on this soon. You'd be amazed how many people spend time-wise on Facebook. There are clever ways to advertise things there. Having a community page is one good way to do it. And knowing like-minded people on Facebook can be a blessing too.

Wow, thanks for the nice comments on my book. Cheers! Happy Holiday Season to you. :)

gguy 15 months ago

Hey thanks, rosarioblog suggested I check this out for my zazzle store

Cheeky Girl 15 months ago

Hy gguy, thanks for checking out my hub on selling goods on Facebook. I had a peek at your Zazzle store, looks interesting. You know you could set up a similar store on Facebook and you'd have over 500 million potential shoppers there, looking at your shirts and any other clothing you sell. Do the shirts have graffix on them. Chicks like Graffix and art too. Just a thought - from a female perspective. Interesting one-liners on the shirts.

Best of luck with the store. You should put a pic of a face or some brand ID on it as it looks kind of faceless and non-human. A face is everything, if ya ask me. Cheers!

gguy 15 months ago

Hey, thanks, I kind of got it going in a rush, I was thinking of graffix, so thanks for confirming it would be a selling point. I am a little slow learning new stuff on the computer even though I use it everyday. I want to see if my zazzle store can be linked to facebook like I do here because it is a print on demand company, Zazzle does all the work, and I get a commision. Would appreciate any advice and I will read your article in full tomorrow. Thanks again!

Cheeky Girl 15 months ago

Hy gguy, you are in a big rush. I hope you sort the graffix out, it will be great I am sure. I am not sure about linking as I don't know anything about zazzle. They should be able to tell you. Advice from me would be to set p a fecebook page and start getting friends there on it, and maybe set up a free twitter account, and follow lots of T-shirt loving women and whoever might buy your wares, and add links to wherever you wanna send your traffic (people) - to your store! That is how you make money on the net - or one of several ways. I presume you are using adsense and Amazon ads on Hub Pages already? Why not do a hub on how you set up the business from its inception? Can't harm anyone...and it will help grow your relationship with folks. Just a wee suggestion from this cheeky girl. Cheers!

gguy 15 months ago

Wow, thanks for all of that, I am sure it will be helpful for this as well as my other businessess. Have you ever though of doing consulting work? And publishing your book as an ereader book? Thanks

Cheeky Girl 15 months ago

Heh! Um, I am fine for now, gguy! That's a nice idea. I am running a few web sites and blogs at the moment, and have enough on my plate. As for the book, I am going to be selling an ebook version of it. But ebook readers will be able to read a PDF or ePub version of it when it goes on sale. Feel free to check out my site -

Cheeky Girl's Apartment.

I won't put the link here but it is in the bottom part of my hub profile page if you wanna check out more about web optimization, there's 2 pages on this subject "Pimp my web" and "Web Promotion".

Anyway, best of luck with the business ventures.

Cassy.

gguy 15 months ago

Hey, very impressive stuff, I'll try to digest it this weekend. My main field is architectural products for the high end market. Learning the computer networking end is a little hard to follow for those of us with mild ADD, but it's so important. Thanks again!

gguy 15 months ago

Cassy, I also fowarded your info to my web designer, she is always looking to network.

Cheeky Girl 15 months ago

I am glad you found it okay, it's for anyone setting out to make their own blog or website or hub pages. Well done on the Architectural produce, and don't worry about the mild ADD. You are great.

Web designer networking if fine. No problem. Have a good weekend. Cheers!

Ayden @ Look At BigCommerce 14 months ago

Hey Cheeky ;)

Thanks for the post. I like how BigCommerce is now on Facebook. This I think, was a must to main a competitive platform.

Cheeky Girl 14 months ago

Hy Ayden, you are welcome. Yes Big Commerce as you put it is alive and kicking. Selling gods on Facebook is possible for anyone now. I intend selling on it this year myself. Social networks will be the places in the near future we will use to do lots of things apart from buying and selling/ We will probably do banking and pay bills on it, and almost everything will be there. It is only a mater of time! Cheers!

Some great comments here on Facebook, guys. Facebook have recently submitted some patents for Search, more usual for a Google-like organisation to do that. Someone is getting into Search a bit more, perhaps.

Hello Feeling Fit: what a cool name! LOL! I'm glad to be of help, my friend! Yes, Facebook is really coming on in leaps and bounds and I have great plans for selling on it in the near future myself. I am researching how I will be selling on it. It is awesome! There are more tools than I have stated here, and perhaps I may need to do an update and mention the newer tools that have come along since I wrote this!

You are most welcome! Have a great day! Cheers!
